Memories of War

Memories of War

My grandmother, Luba Goldin, looking over my grandfather’s medals, most of them from his days (years, actually) in the Second World War. He passed away a few years ago. This was one of those times when I was not sure whether or not I should actually press the shutter. When I saw my grandmother leaning over the display in contemplation, I aimed the camera on reflex and… froze.

As you can see, I did wind up taking the shot. Photography often involves walking the fine line between preserving the moments that make life interesting, beautiful, what have you, and the invasion of privacy. I’m glad I did. I know that this will be one of the shots I’ll be showing my children as I tell them about my family’s history. I also know that it will touch a nerve in me every time I do so.
